The Purpose of Christmas

I read The Purpose of Christmas by Rick Warren this past Christmas season. A great reminder of what Christmas really stands for.

Here are some points I took from the book. There were lots of new things I learnt and some reminders.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the season” Ecclesiastes 3:1

Christmas is a time for Celebration
Christmas is a time for Salvation
Christmas is a time for Reconciliation

Chapter 1- Celebration

Luke 2:10 – I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people

Christmas is worth celebrating for 3 reasons
1. It is personal – I BRING you
2. It is positive – GOOD news of great joy
3. It is universal – for ALL the people

Your capacity for enjoyment is evidence of God’s love for you

Chapter 2- Salvation

Salvation being given the freedom and power to fulfill God’s purpose for your life.

Salvation is:

  • Deliverance from sin, self, hell
  • Saved from something bad
  • We are saved for something good

Jesus saves you from something, for something, by something. For change to happen, it must start in your heart.

Disconnectedness from God causes:

  • Worry
  • Fear
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Conflict
  • Discouragement
  • Emptiness

Disconnectedness causes us to act in ways that create:

  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Resentment
  • Regret

Disconnectedness causes us to feel empty.

Salvation = Freedom

  • Free from guilt over the past
  • Free from bitterness and resentment
  • Free from the expectations from others
  • Free from addictive habits
  • Free from the fear of death

Acts 13:36 – he served God’s purpose in his generation

Use your life to do which is timeless and eternal (God’s purpose) in a timely and contemporary way (in your generation). You serve that which never changes (God’s word) I a setting that is constantly changing (the world).

Religion is do and salvation is done. “It is finished”.

Grace is a gift.

God wants to save you from sin and self, save you for his purpose, and save you by his grace, through faith.

Let go/relax, quit trying to save yourself and trust God to do it for you.

Chapter 3- Reconciliation

Romans 5:11 – …we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation

The starting point to peace in your life is understanding the causes of conflict

  • Self-centeredness
  • Expecting others to meet needs in our lives that only God can meet
  • Peace with God
  • Peace of God
  • Peace with others

I needed this book this year. I can/do get caught up in how the world views Christmas and I forget the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus came was born so that we can be blameless and to love Him unconditionally. Jesus is here it bring joy to the world and to save us from something, for something, by something.

Thank you God for bringing Jesus into our lives so that we might live. The purpose of Christmas is that our relationship with Jesus is personal, positive and universal. It’s for me and for you. He is here to bring the good news.

Please take time to read this book. You don’t have to read it during the a Christmas season but anytime during the year. The purpose of Christmas can be celebrated all year round.
